Did people often suffer from dehydration pre 20th century?
I don't know how to pose this question. But i was thinking about what life was life in the Victorian era or in general during the mid to late 1800's in Europe and America.
I guess different social classes ate/drank differently. Besides hot beverages, alcohol and milk, what did people of this time get most of their fluids from.
Was water safe to drink, or available to drink.
I guess i'm curious because today doctors or nutritionists say to get plenty of water and fluids. I was told you are supposed to drink 8 glasses of water a day.
Wouldn't this have been impossible for the working or middle class.
I think i might write a paper on this for my eng. composition class, i'm still reading into this.
It was only in the very last part of the twentieth century that diarrheal illness was overtaken by respiratory illness as the major cause of death worldwide.
Your "eight glasses of water a day," however, is a popular error arising from a misunderstanding of the average amount of fliud in the daily diet. There's no health benefit under normal conditions to forcing yourself to drink water in excess of thirst. People under normal circumstances simply don't get dehydrated. If they even come close to it, they get thirsty and grab something to drink.
