How long should i leave my aquarium light on?
I have 3 neon tetras, in a 10 gallon tank. i leave the light on during the day, and i turn it off during the night, but whenever i turn the light on/off, they freak out and start swimming all over the place. Should i just keep the light on the whole day?
Neon Tetras get really nervous when they are kept in schools smaller than 6, and I think it is that more than anything that is causing the problem. They're terrified because they feel vulnerable without a proper school, and things that shouldn't bother them, like lights coming on and off every day, do. While normally fish get used to light schedules over a few weeks and learn its not at all dangerous, your Neon Tetras probably never will unless you get more of them. That said, the lights should be on for 10-12 hours to give them a day-night cycle. Turning them off allows them to rest, and it also keeps algae at bay. If you leave it on all the time you will have major algae problems.
